The first wood Indexes were shown by Wells & Webb as a calligraphic styled index in 1854. William H. Page showed the more representational Indexes in his 1859 Specimens of Wood Type.

Most of the major manufacturers showed variations on the Indexes and also referred to them as Fists, Phists, Pointers or Hands. Page appears to have sold Indexes in mirrored pairs.
