Vanderburgh, Wells & Co first listed this design in their 1877 Specimens of Wood Type. Bill, Stark & Co showed a shaded variant of this style as Tuscan Extra Condensed Shade No 1 and Tuscan Extra Condensed Shade No 3 in their 1853 Specimens of Machinery Cut Wood Type. Page showed an ornamented shaded variation in the January 1868 issue of    The Chicago Specimen, Quarterly for Printers and Publishers.
