In American Wood Type Kelly stated that he believed this design to have originated as a wood type in America.

The Aldine that was shown in the Hamilton & Katz 1884 Specimens of Holly Wood Type matches the Page cut. The 1886 Hamilton & Baker Specimens of Holly Wood Type showed a new unique cut (the Hamilton cut) using the existing catalog number.
