This was first shown by Vanderburgh, Wells & Company at least as early as the 1877 Specimens of Wood Type, Borders, Rules, &c. After buying out his partners and renaming the company eponymously in 1890, Heber Wells renamed the border No. 73. After acquiring the Heber Wells company in August 1899, the Hamilton Manufacturing Company changed the name to No. 561 and showed the border in its 1906 Catalog No. 16, Specimens of Wood Type.
